Manju Kiran and Raghunath Thircovil at ChennaiCFUG: ColdFusion and Flash Platform Pre Launch Event

27-06-2009 , Manju Kiran and Raghunath Thircovil came to the Chennai ColdFusion User Group for the Adobe ColdFusion and Flash Platform UG Tour. Since it’s a one day event we had the sessions on Preview of Adobe Flash Platform, Adobe ColdFusion at morning and hands on session on using Flash Builder and Adobe ColdFusion at afternoon. The event hall is jam-packed with more then 80+ attendees from both the ColdFusion and Flex community from Chennai. Raghu started the Event at 10:30 AM and he talked about the awesome features of Flash Builder 4 and Flash Catalyst with lots of demos. After Raghu presentation, Manju started his session on ColdFusion and Bolt. He walked through the various new features and improvements of upcoming Adobe ColdFusion and continues his session after post lunch because of the tons and tons of questions from attendees.

Effect Metadata Tag

Definition :The Effect metadata tag is used to define a custom effect
that will be dispatched when an event occurs

Syntax:

Adding the Effect Metadata Tag:

oThe HorizontalList control always displays items from left to right.

oThe control usually contains a horizontal scroll bar, which lets users

access all items in the list. An optional vertical scroll bar lets users

view items when the full height of the list items is unlikely to fit.

oYou use the tag to define a HorizontalList control.

Specify an id value if you intend to refer to a component elsewhere

in your MXML, either in another tag or in an ActionScript block.

The HorizontalList control displays a horizontal list of items.

Flex provides a number of controls to display large
amounts data in a variety of ways.
There is the List control itself, the DataGrid, the Tree,
and the visualization classes,etc.
By default, the Flex list controls display the data
they are given as simple text.
But Flex is capable of much more, and the list
controls provide a way to
customize their content using itemRenderers.

The DataGrid control is a list that can display more than one column of data. It is a formatted table of data that lets you set editable table cells .

Flex creates instances of item renderers as needed by your application for display and measurement purposes.

if the list control is scrolled or resized, a single item renderer instance may be reused to represent more than one data item.

you should not make assumptions about how many instances of your item renderer are active at any time.

Data Binding

When developing rich applications, you will encounter the need to

reflect values from components, or data models to other components.

The MXML simplifies the process of syncing data values between components,

This process is known as data binding.

The mx:Binding tag is a very simple way to bind data between

flex components without the use of Action Script.

Once you have done this, the destination component will automatically

update when ever there is a change to the source property.

Creating Item Render

Defining a custom item renderer or item editor by using an MXML component gives you greater flexibility and functionality than using a drop-in item renderer or item editor

The advantage of using a component as an item renderer is that you can reuse it all over the application and in different applications, too.

Using this method, you can create more complex item renders because you will create a separate document or class for them.

Information passed to an item renderer is done so through the data property of the item renderer.
